Abstract
In this study, the influence of clays in properties of hybrid materials was investigated. Hydroxy-liquid polybutadiene (HLPB) was chemically modified with maleic anhydride, characterized by infrared spectroscopy, and used to prepare hybrid materials with biodegradable characteristics by blending with glycerol-plasticized cassava starch and two types of commercial organophilic clays at 5 and 10 wt% contents. The hybrid materials were processed by extrusion under mild conditions and characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Improvement of dynamic mechanical properties in comparison with TPS was achieved for the hybrids in which the clay particles were located at the polymers’ interface and within the TPS matrix.
