Abstract

The paper summarizes the most recent understanding of the processes resulting in rock scour and determining its rate. Quantification of rock scour can be accomplished through analytical and semi-empirical approaches, as well as from laboratory measurement results. Analytical approaches are referenced and research needs for implementation to bridge pier scour scenarios are identified. The paper continues by summarizing proxies contained in the Erodibility Index Method (Annandale 2006) to analyze rock scour. A geo-mechanical index is used to quantify the relative ability of rock to resist scour; and stream power is used to quantify the relative magnitude of the erosive capacity of water. The paper concludes by summarizing application of the Erodibility Index Method for quantifying scour of rock around bridge piers.
