Abstract

We are pleased to welcome you to the 5th ACM Workshop on Digital Identity Management -- DIM'09. This workshop explores critical issues concerning identity management technologies for the information society. Identity management is an endeavor for maintaining the integrity of identities through their life cycle. It aims at making the identities available to services in a secure and privacy protected manner. Digital identities play an increasingly important role as the society depends more and more on services provided over Internet. For example, solid identity management practices are essential for implementing social welfare, enabling secure service offering, personalizing users' experiences, and connecting people over networks. Digital identity management must strike the best balance between usability, security, and privacy. A number of identity solutions are being proposed, each taking different approaches with different goals. Existing solutions are not necessarily interoperable or complementary, and sometimes overlap. Thus it is critical to lay foundations for a holistic understanding of problem areas and synergetic approaches to innovative solutions, such as guidelines, methodologies, and tools. We believe that DIM'09 provides you with a unique opportunity to learn about and participate in laying such foundations. The call for papers attracted 21 submissions from Asia, Europe, and North America. The program committee accepted 7 regular and 4 short papers that cover a wide range of topics, including social identities, identity management for mash up, identity governance, communications for identity management, federation proxy, security enhancement for identities, and authorization policy. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the identity management field.
