Abstract

Unreported catches data is one of the main problems which causes data inaccuracy in estimating fish stock. There are indications of missing data at fishing ports. Hence further research is needed to investigate how fish catch data was collected and collated. This study aims to identify critical points for missing data in the catches data collection process at fishing ports, analyze the performance of the data collection system, and recommend suggestions for improvements to the data collection system. Direct observations on catches data collection activities and in-depth interviews with key stakeholders were conducted to gain information. The comparative analysis compared information gathered with the ports data collection procedures. The research shows that the probability of missing data during the data collection process in PPS Nizam Zachman, PPN Muara Angke, and PP Cilincing is 13.3%, 33.3%, and 100%, respectively. This is mainly because no national Standard Operation Procedures are applied to regulate the collection of catches data; hence officers cannot collect catch data correctly and adequately. Other problems that potentially cause data loss are poor infrastructure, limited human resources or enumerators, and low awareness of the data value.
