Abstract
In this paper we compare the results from 3-D simulations of simple planar lines on anisotropic substrates in anisotropic and equivalent isotropic material option. We found out that there exist up to 3–4 % differences between the measured and calculated through the phase delay effective dielectric constants for the main types of planar transmission lines on anisotropic substrates. A specially constructed 3-D model of 50-Ohms microstrip lines with increasing substrate anisotropy confirms the fact that the actual measured equivalent dielectric constants are closer to the values, calculated by the help of the electrical fields' distribution in the structure in comparison to the values obtained by the simulated phase delay. A direct method for accurate calculation of the equivalent dielectric constant of microstrip lines on anisotropic substrates has been proposed.
