Abstract
Purpose. The research aims the analysis of the competitiveness of rail transport in Ukraine compared to other modes of transport in the performance of passenger transport and development of proposals to ensure a balanced sustainability of the railway service. Methodology. The research is based on the methods of mathematical statistics and time series analysis. The trend data of passenger transportation by railways in Ukraine and its competitiveness in comparison with road transport is analyzed. Findings. Unbalanced market of transport services is leading to displacement of the railway transport from passenger market, increase of the risk of people`s death and injury while traveling, increase of Ukraine's dependence on imported oil and oil-products, autos and details for them. Removing this situation is possible only with the support of railway transportation by state and local government. Originality. There are received new dependencies which characterizing trends in the freight and passenger market in Ukraine. Practical value. The practical importance of research shows the community of the processes that occur in railway transport of Ukraine with the processes which taking place on the railways of the United States and Western Europe. Ukraine should apply instruments of state support for railway transport to ensure balanced development of the transport market.
