Abstract

This chapter outlines the difficulties and problems encountered in measuring the strains in the remaining concrete when the concrete bridge is partially demolished for renovation or expansion. The chapter also explains the ways to avoid such problems and how to get around them, if avoiding them is not possible. Encountered problems are the difficulty in complying with the construction schedule, if the strain measurements project is not part of the construction contract; the shortcoming of the measurement equipment and how to minimize such effect; the local conditions of the project; the preparation and installation of the delicate strain gages and the effect of its accuracy on the gage performance; organizing the work to avoid the mix up between the gages and the output of the measurement equipment; and protecting the gages against the weather and vandalism. Observing each one of these components is extremely important for the successful conclusion of the work.
