Abstract
This article examines the main types of surface defects on slabs and their causes. A general explanation is given for the nucleation and growth of surface cracks. An analysis is made of the possibility of applying criteria from the fracture mechanics of deformable solids to the conditions that exist during the continuous casting of steel slabs.
