Abstract

Abstract This paper presents results of recent investigations dealing with the nature of exhaust products resulting from combustion of Diesel fuels, particularly those products composing smoke. Development of some new inspections for improved control over certain properties of Diesel fuels is suggested. New standardized tests should be developed, one whereby the relative stability of a Diesel fuel can be determined, and another whereby the “Diesel-fuel combustibility” quality can be evaluated. New additive-type lubricating oils must be made available for use in the medium- and higher-speed Diesels to combat the deleterious effects of sulphur contents in the fuels for these engines.
