Abstract

An article proposes some rules, founded on the experience in editing Jakub Sobieski’s funeral speeches, which an editor of old secular oratory follows and a title for edited oratorical texts. A fundamental premise is: the title functioning in written speeches (handwritten and printed ones) is not an integral part of the speech – it belongs to the orality, and it appears later, only for notation. The editor’s duty is giving the title an address. This title should result from rethinking (summarily presented in the article): rules how oratorical documents had been functioning and rhetoric system influenced by Old Polish traditions.
