Abstract

Photonuclear reactions play a central role in the investigation of a variety of nuclear structure properties. They are induced via the electromagnetic interaction which is the best understood fundamental interaction and therefore allows for a direct determination of nuclear quantum numbers and transition matrix elements. Photonuclear reactions are also important for our understanding of the synthesis of the chemical elements in the universe. In this chapter, different types of intense photon beams, the formalism of photonuclear reactions, and their application to current questions in nuclear structure physics are introduced and discussed.
