Abstract

Optical and probe techniques for measurements of velocity and scalar characteristics have been combined and improved to allow the quantification of the turbulent heat flux generated in recirculating flames. The technique consists on the extension of a conventional laser-Doppler velocimeter through its combination with either laser Rayleigh scattering or digitallycompensated fine-wire thermocouples and measurements are presented in a strongly sheared disc-stabilized propane-air flame. The results are used to assess the extent to which turbulence mixing in flames of practical relevance is altered by the accompanying heat release and reveal the existence of large zones in these flames characterized by non-gradient scalar fluxes.
