Abstract

This study focused on the Bergen County, New Jersey, Probation Department to determine what factors influence criminal recidivism as defined by probation outcome- a rating each probationer is assigned at probation termination. A number of variables contained in probation records were evaluated, and it was found that employment was the most important variable in predicting a successful outcome. A secondary focus of the study was on the Job Bank Project- a comprehensive employment service within the Probation Department- to determine if that program enhanced a probationer's chances of successful outcome. It was found that the Job Bank Project does improve a probationer's chances of successful outcome, but mainly through its procurement of employment for its clients. In addition, those subjects selected for the Job Bank may have had higher a priori chances of obtaining employment, that is, they were younger and more educated.
