Abstract
A simple model for estimating the probability of intergranular fracture has been presented. This model predicts that intrinsically brittle polycrystalline materials exhibit intergranular fracture even if the fracture energy of the grain boundary is equivalent to that of the cleavage plane. Furthermore, less symmetric crystals will be more prone to intergranular fracture than those with many possible cleavage favourably oriented loading directions.
