Abstract

Abstract A rotifer, Proales paguri sp. nov. (Monogononta, Proalinae), living on the gills of the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus (L.) is described and figured. The percentage of crabs infested was found to increase with host size, and nearly all host specimens with a right propodus longer than 10 rnrn were found infested with from 1 to more than 40 rotifers. P. paguri feeds on the epithelial cells of the gills of the host.
