Abstract

The European Convention on Human Rights contains provisions that provide acceptable standards of criminal justice operations the Contracting States are obligated to follow. The European Court of Human Rights, as the enforcement organ of the Convention, has rendered numerous decisions concerning the rights of prisoners and people who are otherwise being detained by public authorities. These decisions have prompted changes in domestic laws in various Contracting States and have brought about significant enhancement of the protection of prisoners’ rights in Europe. This article intends to introduce to readers some major decisions made by the Court with regard to prisoners’ rights. The article will also provide an overview of the status of the Convention in different Contracting States.
