Abstract

After a period of rapid development, the loans given in the seventies by the Credit Agricole system only increased at the same rate as the whole ofthe loans to the French economy. Within Credit Agricole 's total operations, loans to farmers are relatively declining but those loans to farmers benefit morefrom subsidized interest rates. Subsidization is now mostly concentrated on certain types of loans for starting farmers and modernization. An evaluation ofthe effects of recent reforms in this subsidization is presented on the basis of surveys in several French departements.
