Abstract

In the contemporary world, many countries call themselves republics, some political parties include in their name the word republican and there are individuals who consider themselves committed to republicanism. But what does republicanism mean? In this article, a description and analysis of the meaning of republicanism is made for three important authors of the Renaissance period, Jerónimo Savonarola, Nicolás Maquiavelo and Francisco Guicciardini. The central idea that is developed is that Renaissance republicanism, of which these three authors are reliable representatives, is characterized by six distinctive features, which are the basis for its conception and definition: the common good, civic virtue, freedom, equality, the rule of law and stability. Although these six characteristic features that are listed are specifically specified to the conception he had of republicanism in the Renaissance, it is claimed that they are still the basis for defining and understanding contemporary republicanism.
