Abstract

The phenomenon of pulse splitting owing to fibre birefringence with polarisation mode coupling is studied experimentally. It is found that a sufficiently coherent optical pulse is split into two in spite of the effect of polarisation mode coupling. It is also confirmed experimentally that the pulse splitting is described by the principal states of polarisation.
