Abstract
The proof of the theorem that there exists a primitive polynomial of degree n⩾3 over Fq with arbitrary trace a and arbitrary primitive norm b is completed by establishing the result when n=3 or 4 and a=0. The only exceptions occur when n=3, a=0 and q=4 or 7.
