Abstract

Introduction: Most patients with obstructive jaundice due to perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA) or gallbladder cancer (GBC) are ineligible for surgery. These patients mostly undergo biliary drainage with endoscopic stents that cross the ampulla. This approach can cause bacterial colonization of the bile ducts and recurrent cholangitis often requiring biliary reinterventions. Few patients become eligible for palliative systemic chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to assess the safety, feasibility, and effectiveness of primary percutaneous placement of metal stents for a malignant perihilar biliary stricture.
