Abstract
Preventing ototoxic hearing loss by inhibiting histone deacetylases.
Highlights
The prevalence of hearing loss in the United States is currently estimated to affect one in five individuals over the age of 12 years.[1]
These mechanosensory hair cells have repeatedly been shown to be susceptible to ototoxicity from a multitude of drugs including aminoglycoside antibiotics, loop diuretics, platinumbased chemotherapy agents, and a number of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Hair cells subjected to aminoglycoside antibiotics have increased histone deacetylation through recruitment of histone deacetylases (HDACs) to the chromatin.[3,4]
Summary
The prevalence of hearing loss in the United States is currently estimated to affect one in five individuals over the age of 12 years.[1].
