Abstract
Objective To assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients with essential hypertension and to explore the inter-relationships between different metabolic factors and essential hypertension. Design and methods 1517 consecutive patients (811 men) were recruited in the Hypertension Clinic of BangaBandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from April 2000 to March 2003. Metabolic syndrome was defined as co-occurrence of any three of the following traits: abdominal obesity (waist circumference >102cm in men and 88cm in women), abnormal fasting serum level of glucose (≥110mg/dL), triglycerides (≥150mg/dL) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (≤40mg/dL in men and <50mg/dL in women).
