Abstract
Jafari, S., Gaur, S.N.S., Musavi, A. and Hydarpour, A. 1999. Prevalence of Haemobartonella sp. in dog and cat population of Shiraz, Fars Province of Iran. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 16: 101–104. To study the prevalence of Haemobartonella sp. in dogs and cats of Fars province of Iran, blood samples of 200 dogs and 112 cats of different age groups, breeds and sexes were examined for one year. Though many dogs were infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Haemobartonella canis was not observed. However, three dogs were splenectomized and one of them revealed H. canis in its peripheral blood. All the vital signs in this dog were normal before splenectomy indicating that the animal was in carrier state and the infection flared up because of immunosuppression after splenectomy. Two (1.79%) cats (male, 1–2 yr) were found positive for Haemobartonella felis. The vital signs of both infected cats were normal except one of them showed slight depression and weakness. It could, therefore, be deduced that dog and cat may carry this infection without showing any symptom. This appears to be the first report of Haemobartonella infection in dog and cat in Iran.
