Abstract

Background and Aims: AAA is defined as an enlargement of abdominal aorta ≥ 3cm. The most important risk factors (RF) are genetic preconditions, age, male gender, CVD, personal history of smoking, hypertension and vascular aneurysm of other localization. There is a high prevalence of AAA among men in Caucasian race ≥ 65 years of age, but significantly lower prevalence is among women. The mortality of a ruptured AAA is 60-70%, planned AAA operation has excellent survival rate. The screening of AAA is recommended for men, but screening for women is controversial.
