Abstract
A universal theoretic framework for preterm infant stimulation programs is nonexistent. Many programs are developed on the basis of unsupported assumptions, capitalizing on chance relationships. A theoretic foundation can only be developed when the concept of stimulation is studied analytically. The purpose of this article is to analyze the concept of preterm infant stimulation by identifying definitions, delineating assumptions, developing antecedents and consequences, and designing a model case. Theoretic and methodologic issues are discussed with recommendations designed to provide guidance for future development of a theoretic framework for infant stimulation.
