Abstract

The composition of the powder used for the embedding of silicon nitride-based ceramics during sintering plays an important role in suppressing the decomposition of the sintered body. When sintering is performed in a graphite furnace and/or crucible the increased content of oxygen and carbon in the embedding powder can cause it conversion to silicon carbide, which lessens the protective effect.
