Abstract

Abstract The results of recent powder neutron diffraction investigations of the high pressure structural modifications within the Cu and Ag halides are summarised, with emphasis on the relationship between the high pressure behaviour and the superionic properties observed at elevated temperatures. The experimental evidence for thermally induced disorder within the various high pressure phases is assessed. A high temperature/high pressure device for powder diffraction studies at the ISIS spallation neutron source is described.
