Abstract
FeCrB amorphous alloys were prepared by rapid quenching from the melt. The spontaneous volume magnetostriction ωs of amorphous Fe74Cr11B15 is very large. The value of ωs(T) vs (T/Tc)2 exhibits a linear relationship over a wide temperature range. The measured high-field susceptibility and the estimated forced volume magnetostriction are remarkably large, suggesting a high density of states at the Fermi level. The pressure effect on the Curie temperature is remarkably large, being −3.6 K/kbar and the decrease of the Curie temperature with applied hydrostatic pressure is linear. This result is in agreement with Wohlfarth’s theory of itinerant ferromagnetism. The magnetovolume coupling constants determined from the spontaneous volume magnetostriction and the pressure effect on the Curie temperature are large.
