Abstract
1. 1. The etiology of periodontal disease is apparently the result of the complex influence of general metabolic disturbances, local metabolic disturbances, and infection. It appears unlikely that any one of these etiologic agents mentioned could cause establishment of typical periodontal disease. 2. 2. The importance of dietary deficiencies and endocrine dysfunctions as common systemic causes predisposing to the onset and progress of periodontal disease seems well substantiated. 3. 3. Inadequate and abnormal occlusal function seems to be the most important cause of local metabolic disturbances. 4. 4. Microorganisms appear to be important, but secondary, etiologic factors which contribute to the destruction of the periodontal tissues.
