Abstract

ABSTRACT The family Aspidorhynchidae consists of six genera: Aspidorhynchus, Belonostomus, Vinctifer, Pseudovinctifer, Richmondichthys and Jonoichthys. The genus Vinctifer has three nominal species, as follows: V. comptoni, found in Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Antarctica and Equatorial Guinea; V. ferrusquiai, present so far in the Sabinal Formation (Mexico); and V. longirostris, until then restricted to the Marizal Formation, in the Tucano Basin (Brazil). The presence of Vinctifer longirostris in the dark shales of the Romualdo Formation, Araripe Basin (Brazil), which was only speculated in previous works, is confirmed herein. Moreover, we added new morphological diagnostic features for this species, which were not observed in the specimens described for the Marizal Formation. This new record expands the geographical distribution of the species and also contributes to a better understanding of the diversity of the paleoichthyofauna of the Araripe Basin.
