Abstract

The present study was performed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of feather star, Capillaster multiradiatus extract against human and fish pathogenic bacterial strains. The feather star, C. multiradiatus were collected from the Gulf of Mannar, Tuticorin coast, Tamil Nadu. The samples were air dried and extracted with chloroform, acetone, methanol, ethyl acetate, butanol and water to select the most suitable solvent extraction for antibacterial activity. The acetone extract of C. multiradiatus exhibited broad spectrum antibacterial activity against both fish and human pathogenic bacteria as compared to other extracts. Acetone extract was further fractionated and purified using column chromatographic technique. The purified fraction showed significant antibacterial activity against most of the human and fish pathogenic bacterial strains. From this results it can be concluded that C. multiradiatus has potential active metabolic compounds to inhibit the human and fish pathogenic bacterial strains.
