Abstract

For patients with common mental health problems, self help manuals are increasingly being used to bridge the gap between the supply and demand for mental health care. This article explores the advantages and disadvantages of prescribing self help manuals. It briefly reviews the research evidence and offers some guidance for health workers who are providing support to patients.
