Abstract

Nurse prescribers encounter patients with superficial skin and fungal infections on a regular basis. Nurse prescribers can provide patients with information and education on fungal infections, advice on general skin care and measures to reduce recurrence of infections. Nurse prescribers can offer treatment options for superficial skin and nail fungal infections, and advise when referral is necessary. In order to achieve this, they need to expand their knowledge of skin and nail fungal infections, fully understanding how to recognize and screen for fungal infections, as treatment needs to be advised and prescribed according to the type of causative fungi organism.
