Well-defined layers of 235UO 2 can be prepared by the vacuum evaporation technique. Contaminants introduced by the procedures of painting or electroplating are avoided by evaporating the material directly from a 235UO 2 pellet by electron bombardment heating. The resulting targets are characterized by alpha or gamma counting.
