Abstract

In order to prepare a single crystal of TiC with a high purity using the floating zone method, the feed rods were prepared by the self-combustion reaction of Ti metal and carbon. The control of the composition of the feed rod, the impurity refining, the density of the feed rod and the degree of the reaction were examined in the process of self-combustion. Using the feed rod prepared in this way, a high purity single crystal with controlled composition was prepared by a modified zone leveling method.
