Abstract

We developed superconducting YBa 2Cu 3O 7− x (YBCO)/Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O 8+ y (Bi-2212)/YBCO trilayer films as new type of intrinsic Josephson junctions. This trilayer structure is a novel planar type Josephson junction, in which YBCO with weak anisotropy merely act as electrodes, while Bi-2212 has extreme two-dimensionality and acts as an intrinsic Josephson junction array. We have studied the heteroepitaxial growth and transport properties of mesa junctions of the trilayer films. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed good heteroepitaxial growth for each layer. It is found that the transport properties of the mesa junctions strongly depend on the ex situ annealing conditions, which is important for obtaining superconductivity after fabricating the mesa structures.
