Abstract
Alcoholic solutions of silicon ethoxide (TEOS) were ammonolysed with dry ammonia and the reactions led to formation of amines, alcohol and silica sol. On ageing, the sol gelled to a monolithic mass. The gels produced by the non-aqueous route vitrified to clear silica glass in the temperature range 1100°-1200°C, depending on the thickness of the samples. The refractive index and density of the glass were nearly the same as those for vitreous silica.
