Abstract

Alternating current plasma display panel (AC PDP) has been considered as a promising TV set owing to the high luminance, high contrast, wide viewing angle and so on. Among the elements composing the AC PDP, protecting layer plays an important role in reducing the voltage for discharge. MgO film has been widely used as a surface protective layer for the dielectric material in AC PDP [1, 2]. Nevertheless, the current MgO protective layer is still thought to be not one of the best materials to meet the demand of advanced high vision AC PDP with good light emission efficiency, low power consumption and high image fidelity. Thus, one of the effective methods to improve the luminous efficiency and reduce power consumption of AC PDP is searching for new protecting layer materials. In this paper, Lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) thin films are prepared using electron beam evaporation method and introduced into a planar-type AC plasma display panel cell as a new protecting layer material.
