Abstract

Eco-bricks are bricks of organic nature synthesized from organic wastes, mine wastes and mycelium produced by fungi. Eco-bricks are non-pollutant, eco-friendly and possess enhanced efficiency. Eco-bricks are novel constructs which overcomes the problems emanating during construction such as raw materials of low quality, decreased strength, minimal water absorption capacity and reduction in shelf life due to increase in the internal as well as external cracking. Eco-bricks are also susceptible to microbial contamination. Therefore, a topical coating of microbially synthesized silver nanoparticles was applied over the eco-bricks so as to increase its purity. The synthesized nanoparticles were subjected to characterization by techniques such as UV visible spectrophotometry, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy and X Ray Diffraction analysis. Tests such as compressive strength test, water absorption test, fire resistance test, efflorescence test and drop test were performed to determine the compatibility of the synthesized eco-bricks. These eco-bricks are strong, cost effective, eco-friendly, biodegradable and replenishable giving rise to an efficient brick formulation which can be used as an appropriate alternative material for construction in future.
