Abstract

Summary Some methods are dicussed regarding the preparation of copper chromium oxide catalysts used for the reduction of esters to saturated alcohols. The preparation of these catalysts via basic copper ammonium chromate is dealt with in detail. Barium-promoted and normal copper chromium oxide catalysts are compared in ester reductions. Barium is required to ensure a long active life of the catalysts. Unsaturated alcohols can be prepared from esters using zinc chromium oxide catalysts. Catalyst preparation methods especially via basic zinc chromium oxide are also discussed. The activity of the catalysts thus obtained is low and several undesired side-reactions occur. However, addition of aluminium promotes the reaction desired.
