Abstract

Synthetic dyes contain permanent coloring agents such as aromatic diamine, amino compounds (4-amino-2-hydrosytoluene, meta-aminophenol, etc.), hydric phenols, polycompounds (para-phenylenediamine) which results in many side effects such as skin irritation, erythrema, loss or damage of hair, and even skin cancer. Dyes obtained from various plant sources are simply available, economical, safe, competent, and rarely have side-effects. In traditional systems of medicines such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, the prescribed dyes are entirely based on plants and metal oxides. From ancient times, plant components such as saffron, indigo, heena, amla, lohbhasm, etc. are applied for coloring, dyeing, etc. The present research focuses on the development of coloring dye containing herbal components such as aloe vera leaf (Aloe barbadensis), beet root (Beta vulgaris), amla fruit (Phyllanthus emblica), and palash flower (Butea monosperma). The formulations were further evaluated for skin irritation test, coloring effect on grey hairs, fastening property, and pH. However, further clinical and pharmaceutical studies are essentially needed at present to completely evaluate its safety, suitability, stability, clinical effects, and wide range acceptability in modern society.
