Abstract

The series of Yb 3+ doped BaBi 2-y Nb 2 Yb y O 9 ceramics have been prepared by the double sintering method. The XRD, FTIR and PL spectra have been observed for all the samples and found to be matched with previously reported work. The ceramic has phase group Fmmm and orthorhombic geometry. The two dominating FTIR bands are observed at 598 cm −1 and 816 cm −1 which are the resultant of NbO 6 bond vibrations. The weak bands at 1067 cm −1 and 2990 cm −1 also appeared. These bands seem to be affected by the doping of Yb 3+ ions in the host material. The photoluminescence spectra were collected at room temperature and excited at 490 nm. The two emission bands were obtained at 515 and 590 nm. The highest PL emission intensity peak was detected at optimum Yb 3+ concentration, i.e. y = 0.06.
