Abstract

It has been reported that rectal cancers that are downstaged after preoperative chemoradiotherapy have a better outcome than non responders. It is also believed that combined chemotherapy and radiation will be more likely to produce responses than radiation alone. Therefore most centers that utilize preoperative treatment have replaced radiation alone with a combination of preoperative radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
