Abstract

EDITORIAL COMMENT: This paper was presented by Dr O'Connor at the conference on Individual Testing and Review, Centre for Law and Medicine, Bond University School of Law, June 16,1991. It had great impact on the audience and the editor who therefore asked Dr O'Connor to allow us to publish it as delivered. The calculated risk of death from AIDS for surgeons of about 1 in 70 should alarm readers. The risk will be greater if the prevalence of HIV seropositivity increases to the levels now reported from other countries e.g. in Thailand about 6% of subjects with sexually transmitted diseases and more than 15% of prostitutes are seropositive; the seropositivity rate among recruits in the Thai army rose from 2% to 6% between June and December, 1990.
