Abstract

Effects of prenatal and perinatal events were studied in 163 infants (irritable and nonirritable) from low socioeconomic families. In nonirritable infants, habituation and range of state are affected by obstetric medication. Range of state is also affected by length of labor and smoking. Fetal compromise affects motoric processes. In irritable infants, regulation of state is affected by length of labor. These findings are not attributable to other potential confounds.
