Abstract

In preliminary studies on dispersion of the face fly, Musca autumnalis De Geer, conducted in Maryland in 1961 and 1962, several methods of marking laboratory-reared and field-collected face flies were tried. In field experiments, face flies marked on the dorsum with colored inks were released among 4 herds of cattle. Some flies went directly to the eyes of the cows, but only a few of the released insects were found on the cattle at any one time. In neighboring herds surveyed, marked flies were found at distances up to ¾ mile from the points of release.
