Abstract

Charles, et al. (1933) extracted and characterized helminthosporin, a trihydroxymethylanthraquinone, from the mycelium of Helminthosporium gramineum Rabh. They also found a tetrahydroxymethanthraquinone which was later named catenarin. This substance was synthesized by Anslow and Raistrick (1941). Charles, et al. (1933) also performed certain experiments to determine favorable pH, carbon source concentration, and favorable nitrogen sources for H. gramineum, but they were primarily interested in production of pigment for chemical characterization and not in the biosynthesis or function of the pigments. The purpose of this paper is to present certain data pertaining to the growth of H. gramineum on assorted carbon sources under different environmental conditions.
