Abstract
Simple and compound planetary gears are extensively used on aircraft high lift applications, which include leading edge and trailing edge actuators. These gears are usually highly loaded and compact in size. Preliminary design considerations that have far-reaching effects on actuator sizing are discussed herein. These include the selection of actuators, the arrangement of planets, the counting of tooth hits, the effect of synchronization or non-synchronization, the instantaneous efficiency, and the ease of assembly.
