Abstract
VERY FEW studies have been reported concerning pregnanediol excretion in the urine of newborn infants.1-5Roby et al1measured urinary pregnanediol by a gravimetric method in five normal term infants. Normal values of excretion averaged 250μg on the first day of life fell to 46μg by the sixth day of life. Bergstrand and Gemzell2measured pregnanediol excretion in children between the ages of 3 and 15 years but have published no information during the neonatal period.2Utilizing the method of Klopper, an average value of 730 ± 50μg was found in 85 normal children. This finding contrasted with those of Talbot et al3and Balassi and Ricca,4who reported that no pregnanediol could be found in the urine of children.3,4Only one previous report appears in the literature utilizing the method of gas liquid chromatography for analysis of urinary pregnanediol in newborn infants.
